What New Mums Need vs What They Actually Get (And Why You Feel So Exhausted)
There was a point where I kept losing my patience with my kids—and I felt so guilty about it.
I remember thinking, why can’t I just cope better?
Why does everything feel so hard?
The moment it clicked
When I actually stopped and looked at my day, it made sense.
I was doing everything:
cleaning
cooking
looking after the kids
keeping the house running
…and somehow also expecting myself to “rest” in between.
When I saw it like this—what I actually needed vs what I was getting—it just clicked.
What new mums really need
After having a baby, what we need is actually quite simple:
rest and sleep to recover
time to heal
support from others
space to slow down
This isn’t a luxury—it’s essential.
What we often get instead
For many mums, reality looks very different:
constant multitasking
carrying the mental load
putting ourselves last
trying to “fit in” rest
And that’s where the problem starts.
No wonder you feel overwhelmed
When your needs don’t match your reality, everything starts to feel harder.
You feel:
more irritable
more emotional
more overwhelmed
And it’s easy to think:
“I just need to cope better.”
But that’s not the truth.
The shift that changed everything
The biggest shift for me was realising this:
I wasn’t struggling because I wasn’t trying hard enough.
I was struggling because I was exhausted.
And when you’re exhausted, you’re not yourself.
What you actually need
You don’t need:
more discipline
more patience
a better routine
You need:
more rest and more support
Start here
If this resonates with you, start small.
I’ve created a simple Nest & Rest checklist to help you create more space in your day—without needing to overhaul everything.
Final thought
And once you start giving yourself what you actually need, everything begins to feel a little easier.
