Your Minimum Rest Baseline as a New Mum
When you become a mum, exhaustion slowly starts to feel normal.
Broken sleep.
No quiet moments.
Constant interruptions.
Pushing through because you have no other choice.
Over time, many mums stop asking:
“Am I rested enough to function well?”
And instead ask:
“How little rest can I survive on?”
But survival mode should not become your baseline.
Why Rest Matters More Than Total Sleep Hours
One of the biggest misconceptions about postpartum exhaustion is that total hours of sleep are all that matter.
In reality, uninterrupted sleep matters too.
Research has shown that many postpartum mums only get sleep stretches of around 2–4 hours at a time during the early months after birth. Fragmented sleep can affect:
emotional regulation
patience
stress tolerance
memory and concentration
mental wellbeing
physical recovery
That’s why you can technically “sleep” but still feel completely exhausted.
Your brain and nervous system need deeper stretches of recovery where possible.
What Is a Minimum Rest Baseline?
A minimum rest baseline is not about perfection.
It’s not:
luxury spa days
strict routines
unrealistic self-care expectations
It’s the minimum level of support that helps you function better physically, emotionally, and mentally.
For many mums, that baseline includes:
4–5 hours of uninterrupted sleep
Even a slightly longer stretch of sleep can make a significant difference to emotional wellbeing and coping capacity.
Protected quiet time during the day
This could be:
resting during nap time
lying down
reading
simply being without demands for a short time
Regular breaks during the day
Small pauses matter:
a hot drink
sitting down
stepping outside
taking a shower uninterrupted
Evening wind-down time
Your nervous system needs moments where you are no longer “on” for everyone else.
Why This Matters
When mums are chronically exhausted, everything feels harder.
You become:
more overstimulated
more emotionally reactive
less patient
mentally drained
physically depleted
That does not mean you are failing.
It means your body and mind need more support.
This Is Not Luxury
Many mums feel guilty needing rest.
But rest is not laziness.
Rest supports:
emotional regulation
recovery
patience
mental clarity
resilience
And when you are supported, everything else becomes easier to carry.
Because exhaustion changes everything.
And you deserve support before burnout.
You were never meant to function on empty.
